Santa Barbara City Proclamation: An Evening for Peace

The City of Santa Barbara proclaimed September 26, 2025, as An Evening for Peace in recognition of the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons. The proclamation honors the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation’s more than 40 years of advocacy for a world free of nuclear weapons and celebrates this year’s honorees—Martin Sheen and Pope Francis—for their unwavering dedication to peace, disarmament, and nonviolence.

Councilmember Kristen Sneddon, for Santa Barbara’s District 4, delivered the Proclamation at the 38th Evening for Peace on behalf of Santa Barbara Mayor Randy Rowse. The proclamation affirms Santa Barbara’s commitment to advancing global cooperation, peace leadership, and support for the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

Proclamation

An Evening of Peace

September 26th, 2025

WHEREAS, the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation has, for more than 40 years, advocated for a world free of nuclear weapons, annually honoring outstanding leaders who champion peace; and

WHEREAS, Martin Sheen, a steadfast voice for nuclear disarmament and nonviolence, has demonstrated his commitment through peaceful demonstrations and unwavering engagement in nonviolent civil disobedience; and

WHEREAS, Pope Francis ardently condemned the possession and use of nuclear weapons and remained deeply committed to building a peaceful future; and

WHEREAS, this year the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation honors Martin Sheen with the Daniel Ellsberg Lifetime Achievement Award and Pope Francis (posthumously) with its Distinguished Peace Leadership Award for their courageous efforts to create a more peaceful, nuclear weapons free world; and

WHEREAS, September 26 is the International Day for Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, recognizing our community’s commitment to advancing local, national, and global peace through actions of cooperative goodwill; and

WHEREAS, the City of Santa Barbara strongly supports the United States becoming a signatory to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Randy Rowse, by virtue of the authority vested in me as Mayor of the City of Santa Barbara, California, do hereby proclaim September 26, 2025 as AN EVENING FOR PEACE in Santa Barbara in recognition of the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, and with a call for continued efforts to cultivate peace leadership and abolish nuclear weapons for the benefit of all of humanity.
